Eddy Current

Operating Principle of Eddy Current

Eddy currents are widely used in Non-Destructive Testing (NDT) to detect and characterize surface and subsurface defects in conductive materials, with a penetration depth of up to 30 µm under optimal conditions.

These currents are induced by a variable magnetic field generated by a sensor. They circulate locally within the examined material, with their distribution and spread influenced by several factors:

  • The excitation magnetic field
  • The geometry of the material being examined
  • The electrical conductivity of the material
  • The magnetic permeability of the material

When a defect is present in the material, the flow of Eddy Current is disrupted, altering the apparent impedance of the sensor. This change depends on the nature and size of the anomaly.

These variations are displayed in real-time on the instrument screen as Eddy Current signals or Lissajous figures. The amplitude and phase of these signals provide information about the nature of the detected defect.

Eddy Current are also affected by the electrical conductivity and magnetic permeability of a material. Therefore, this inspection method can also be used for Material Sorting applications.

Main advantages with Eddy Current testing

  • No contact between the product and the sensor
  • Inspections carried out at very high speeds
  • Ability to carry out inspections at very high temperatures
  • Versatile use for inspecting different materials
  • High sensitivity in defect detection
  • Easy integration of ET systems into production lines
